My New Song: Down the Street

Down the Street
(click to play mp3)

Leafs have fallen, trees peer stark
skies as dark as emery.
That’s the street where I grew up,
scenes appear from memory:
winds blow cattails and long weeds,
quite wind on open fields,
lips whisper old childish dreams
eyes roam over Cleveland streets.
And longing and sober,
leafs fell in October,
reflection of youth in these dreams,
and I keep on saying, over and over,
don’t go away stay with me.
And I hear the winter call,
brewing in the sky dim tea.
all across the world leafs fall
to the ground, away from me.
And I see these buildings rise,
filled with people, books, and food.
But in your blue, solemn eyes
hunger and forgiveness broods.
And all I remember
I froze in November . . .
and branches fell down to the ground . . .
but you kept on living all through the December,
and my roots could never be found.
